Day 19 – 1/18/16
Timer on…
Halfway through today…and it’s the celebration of Dr. King’s birthday. I fell asleep to and work up to his voice last night and today…they have been playing his speeches all day…and, I think, I have been reflecting all day on “hating the action and loving the person…”
Hmmm…I suppose there’s a lot in that…as a 10 year old I learned that love is very complicated and I have never been able to really put into words why I understood so much in that horrible moment at 10 years old, where I learned that love is very complicated. That moment when someone does something horrible that you love, and you know you still love them, but…something is making you hate them, but you love them, and then you hate the memory, but you still love them… Every time I tell that story, people are judgmental, but…now I can tell it with the knowledge that I really hated the action and still hate the action, but I always loved the person…
And, I guess that’s an important lesson in unconditional love…there is no condition on the love because love cannot be controlled. BUT…Actions have conditions, and we are allowed to not love the action…
Hmmm…
Well, back to yoga…
I was on to the next section: The Twists, and the first I have already discussed: Jathara Parivartanasan – Reclining Spinal Twist, so…I don’t think I need to do that one again…
The next pose is Ardha Matsyendrasana – Half Twist in a sitting position
The benefits according to THE YOGA HANDBOOK:
The meaning according to THE YOGA HANDBOOK :
“ ‘Ardha’ means ‘half’ and Matsyendrasana’ is the name of a great Yogi. It also translates as the “lord of the fish,” as this twisting posture is said to have first been taught by a fish who wished to be transformed into a human by Lord Shiva. “Matsya” also translates as “the power that vitalizes and energizes and has the ability to turn on the subtle energies of the body and mind.” “Endra” refers to the power of the mind. Thus this posture is one of the most powerful exercises to increase mental alertness and clarity.”
Hmmm…that’s all I have time for today, but…I will continue this discussion tomorrow…
Day 20 – 1/19/16
Timer: on; trust red sweatpants that say ‘love’: adorned; french braid: set (albeit, not so good, today); floor: cleaned…
Yoga went well today…I was doing the long version and realized I was a bit tired, and I couldn’t figure out why, and then I realized that I had NACL training this morning and then I was running around with heavy objects for about 30 minutes when I got to school and, lastly, I walked the dogs 3 times in really cold weather looking like the little brother from THE CHRISTMAS STORY…so…tired-er…than normal equaled shorten the practice halfway through…
So…the Ardha Matsyendrasana had a lot going on with it yesterday that I don’t think I’ve ever really thought about before. Firstly, there’s this vagus nerve thing-y and then there’s this peristalsis thing-y (that I think I’ve only heard on medical TV shows), so…I guess it needs more examination…
Vagus Nerve…I like the name MentalFloss.com, so we’ll look at what they say:
“What happens in the vagus nerve, it turns out, doesn’t stay in the vagus nerve. The longest of the cranial nerves, the vagus nerve is so named because it “wanders” like a vagabond, sending out fibers from your brainstem to your visceral organs. The vagus nerve is literally the captain of your inner never center – the parasympathetic nervous system, to be specific. And like a good captain, it does a great job of overseeing a vast range of crucial functions, communicating nerve impulses to every organ in your body. New research has revealed that it may also be the missing link to treating chronic inflammation, and the beginning of an exciting new field of treatment that leaves medications behind.”
Hmmm…chronic inflammation…I have chronic inflammation…I have acid reflux disorder and my vocal chords and larynx like to look like they have a sun burn. I never used to get acid reflux…this started after my Dad’s death, and I thought I was getting heartburn because my heart was broken…the doctor admonished me months later for being a doof, and put me on meds…but I still think it was my broken heart.
Maybe this pose will make it so I don’t need to be on Meds…I will look more into this…
Nope…apparently, not…I got my hopes up for nothing…
But…according to MentalFloss.com it is “intimately involved with [my] heart.”
“The vagus nerve is responsible for controlling the heart rate via electrical impulses to the sinoatrial node of the heart, where acetylcholine release slows the pulse. The way doctors determine the “tone” or “strength” of your vagus nerve (and your cardiac health) is by measuring the time between your individual heart beats, and then plotting this on a chart over time.”
Hmmm…this pose will give me a stronger heart…all that is needed in a Love/Acceptance Ritual…
Apparently is (also), according to MentalFloss.com, “translates between [my] gut and [my] brain.”
“Your gut uses the vagus nerve like a walkie-talkie to tell your brain how you’re feeling via electric impulses called ‘action potentials’. Your gut feelings are very real.”
A couple of days ago I talked about how I sense my best friend’s feelings and that I need to have that same feeling with my chosen one…and that The Snake/Cobra Pose reminded me of that feeling. Well, I always have that feeling in my “gut”. So…apparently, my gut gets worked out in Ardha Matsyendrasana. Good thing for this ritual…
Alright…timer off…

The next pose is Ardha Matsyendrasana – Half Twist in a sitting position
The benefits according to THE YOGA HANDBOOK:
- Helps relieve backache and aligns the vertebrae.
- Gives a gentle squeeze to the abdominal organs, such as the stomach, liver, kidneys, and pancreas, and helps peristalsis in the intestines.
- Gives a gentle squeeze to the vagus nerve and the root of the autonomic nervous system.
- Increases sense of vitality.
- Strengthens the back.
