Day 39

So…the benefits…
All of the Sahrara (Crown) Chakra poses have the same benefits, according to Noa Belling’s THE YOGA HANDBOOK…
“It is quite common to see children at playgrounds jumping, tumbline, hanging upside down, and doing cartwheels. This renders them healthy and energetic, as their blood circulation, coordination, and balance are constantly being moved about and challenged. As we grow older, we tend to become less active, which is a common contributing factor to poorer blood circulation, reduced energy levels, and loss of youthfulness. Yoga offers one way to keep twisting, bending, and inverting your body and exercising your heart and all other muscles in your body. Inverted postures are an indispensable part of a Yoga practice. They influence the functioning of the body in numberous ways; benefits are experienced on a physiological, mental, and spiritual level, and these postures revitalize the entire system. They can help alleviate fatigue, insomnia, headaches, varicose veins, digestive problems, and excess tension and anxiety, for example. Some practitioners go so far as to describe these inverted postures, particulary Sirsana (the Headstand), as a pancea for all who practice.”
Not sure about that last statement, but I will say, “I like the Inverted Postures, and they like me.” Even today at the Iyengar Yoga class, Janet, the teacher, commented that Sarvangasana looked beautiful on me…and that it was clear that I liked that position…I said that I did… I was having terrible allergies when I first moved back to New York…I still am, but…they are exponentially better after I started this practice. According to some research I did…the Headstand is a great pose for allergies…and once, when practicing, I found that it opened up my ears that had been plugged for weeks, in one practice…so…maybe it is a “panacea”…
The Benefits of the Visuddha (Throat) Chakra poses, specifically, Supta Vajrasana (Child’s Pose):
“The rest poses are not graded as for the other postures. They are all suitable for everyone, with one or two exceptions where small adaptations may be required. All the rest poses presented in this section are symmetrical and help restore a state of balance in the body. Rest poses are recommended at the end, and sometimes also at the beginning, of a session. They are also recommended at various stages during a session, to allow the body to rest between postures, and can be used as counterpostures to back bends, side bends, or twists. The rest pose particularly recommended for the end and for the beginning of a session is Savasana (the Corpse pose).”
Well, we all know that I’m not using Corpse, in this series, but…I did do it today after not having done it for a month, and, I will admit that it made me cry today…I felt very claustrophobic in it…so…I might continue to avoid it…when I can…and hope for “balance” in another “rest” pose, i.e. Child’s Pose.
Benefits of Jathara Privritti (Spinal Twist with Straight legs):
· Helps relieve backache.
· Gives a gentle massage to the lower back.
· Aligns the spinal vertebrae.
· Increases a sense of vitality.
· Gives a gentle squeeze to the abdominal organs, such as the stomach, liver, kidneys, and pancreas, and helps peristalsis in the intestines.
· Gives a gentle squeeze to the vagus nerve and the root of the autonomic nervous system.
That’s all for today…
